STL Subies is local to the greater St. Louis, Missouri area. Our event locations rotate venues, and we try to spend time in each part of St. Louis and St. Charles counties in an effort to include as many folks as possible.
The group schedules an event monthly at a minimum. When weather is fair, we make an effort to get together more often.
Ecotech Import Automotive. More information about Ecotech is available here.
For Turbo cars, the general consensus is Liquimoly 5w40. This is what the experts at Ecotech recommend, but may vary by application.
According to Cobb tuning, feedback knock correction values of -2.5 or less are considered 'normal.' It may become a concern if these values regularly appear under engine load, or if your DAM (Dynamic Advance Multiplier) drop below 1.
Subarus are sensitive to modification. Essentially, if the part changes how air or fuel enters or exits the engine, it requires a tune. Our resident youtuber HeavyMetalWRX has a great video on this subject. Don't take our word for it though- consult a professional tuner.
STL Subies unilaterally opposes modifying emissions compliance components, and will never recommend a method or service to circumnavigate emissions laws.
The historic cause behind the failure of head gaskets in Subaru engines was a material one. The science behind it changed through the generations, but it used to be an issue with the design of the gaskets themselves.
From 1996-1999 the use of composite gaskets with graphite sealing layers led to internal head gasket leaks. After 1999 the heads were completely redesigned in an effort to combat these issues.
From 2000-2008, the new head gaskets typically started rupturing and leaking externally. This usually didn’t result in overheating, but did cause lubrication concerns and the failures associated with such. Research into the new failures suggested that engine coolant was reacting with the material in the gaskets and degrading the gasket through electrolysis.
In 2009 Subaru started installing multi-layered steel gaskets and the issue hasn’t been as prevalent since.
